Food production needs to double by 2030/2050

Peter Doodes points out that this is not so...

We have been told repeatedly that food production needs to double by
2030/2050 in order to feed the world. That "statistic" was produced by
Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the American Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) at a speech he made to the United Nations in June
2008. It has been trotted out ever since by journalists,
politicians, scientists and manufacturers who have changed the dates
to suit. Jacques Diouf actually took the liberty of rounding up a
figure from his own organisation's report ‘World Agriculture: Towards
2030/2050’. That report stated that the developing world would need
to increase cereal production by at least 70% by 2050 in order to
satisfy the predicted demand for a change to a "western" (American)
diet - i.e. richer in meat. This is a highly dubious claim under any
circumstances.

Almost 1/5th of the world’s population is in India. India is one of
the main developing world’s countries, a near 100% religious country,
with the majority involved being Hindu/ Buddhist/ Jainism/Sikhism/
Zoroastrianism followers, all are vegetarian, as are half the Sikh
followers. So of almost 1/5th of the world’s population, 84% are
vegetarian, a point that somehow has been ‘overlooked’ when the
‘world’s demand for a Western diet’ is calculated.

One high profile figure makes a highly exaggerated statement and the
rest of the world takes it as fact. Even our own government is using
it. DEFRA is aware of the true facts; I have written to them on
several occasions but they have made no attempt to acknowledge or
correct this. I have also written to my MEP who also made this claim,
but have yet to receive a reply

Let us not forget that we in the West throw away a third of the food
that is produced. It can never reach the supermarket shelves as it
can be the ‘wrong’ shape or size, it can be discarded by the
supermarkets as it becomes out of date, or it can be binned at the
household or restaurant. Let’s face facts; the main reason for this
food/population claim is to speed up the acceptance and introduction
of GM food.

Please do what I do when this happens. Write to the Metro and
dispute the claims, copy in your MP and MEP, I am often amazed just
how much we know re the environment and just how little they know;
they are usually only fed info by big business.
