Lichens for all at Hurst Green Church yard on June

'Church' and 'wild' are not usually two words you would see together- but St John's, Hurst Green held the first of a series of events on Saturday 4th June 2011, called 'Church Goes Wild'.

Their aim is to help the congregation and wider community gain a better understanding of the wildlife around them, and will contribute to their 3rd Eco Congregation Award.

The first event focused on the miniature world of lichens and the afternoon was led by Cumbrian naturalist, Dr Allan Pentecost. He explained how churchyards could be very rich habitats for lichens, due to the variety of stone and the undisturbed environment.

After a short presentation in the church, the adults and children spent time exploring the churchyard for examples of lichens. The squeals of delight as the children discovered this world for themselves showed how a little new knowledge can inspire and enthuse us!

The afternoon finished with a Jacob's Join tea in the Old School hall.
The next event will be on 'Bugs and Birds' on Saturday July 30th , 3pm in St John's Church, led by Phil Dykes, a nature reserve officer.

All are welcome, and as usual, there will be a Jacob's Join tea.
