October 2010

PRAYER  FOR  NAGOYA

A quarter of the world's mammals, and one fifth of the world's plants are under threat of extinction.

Lord we thank you for this beautiful world with its amazing variety of animals and plants.

Be with those meeting at the Nagoya Conference in Japan, 18-29 October as they seek to find ways of preserving your world . . .
. . . ways of preventing the destruction of habitats and soil, and of saving species from extinction.

Please help us to understand your world more - to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Encourage us to make wildlife conservation areas in our churchyards, gardens, parks and farms and to take part in local nature surveys.

Help us to support wildlife conservation charities with our money and our words.

May we never forget that we are stewards of your creation and that we hold it in trust for future generations.

Amen

Biodiversity is Life Support systems. Loss of Biodiversity = loss of soil, loss of genetic resources for plant breeding, loss of fishing industry, loss of bees fo pollinatrions due to loss of wildflowers. Please Download Nagoya and Biodiversity Prayer Poster and display some at your church and pray for the Nagoya conference.. Please visit the Big Nature Debate. Please tell us what your church is doing to save biodiversity.

Let us be thankful that they have made some decisions and plans at the conference - and let us hope they can implement them.

(Paraphrased) - "The Anti-slavery Campaign had William Wilberforce, The Race campaign had Martin Luther King. Where are the Wilberforces and Martin Luther Kings of the Green campaign? - you are they!" (I'll replace this when I get a transcript).

Quote from speech: "But I'd want also to underline the need for us to change our habits enough to make us more aware of the diversity of life around us. I once suggested that one necessary contribution to a better awareness of these issues was to make sure we went out of doors in the wet from time to time (a suitable lesson from Noah…), and – if we haven't got gardens of our own – make sure we took opportunities of watching the changing of the seasons on the earth's surface."

The Bishop of London unveiled a new CofE Tool kit and resources for reducing CO2 production. He was at Speaking on 11 June at Lambeth Palace at an event to mark the third anniversary of the CofE's environmental campaign, and urged representatives from all dioceses to go one step further in cutting the carbon reminding them that caring for the planet is a Christian imperative for the sake of future generations. See these resources

The Church of England has signed up to Government targets of reducing its carbon emissions to 20% of current levels by 2050.

Archbishop urges prayer for planet on Environment Sunday - June 7

Wednesday 03 June 2009 - This is from Press release of Archbishop of Cantrebury

The Archbishop of Canterbury is urging churches to use Environment Sunday (June 7) to pray for the planet and campaign for climate change in the run up to the important UN talks later this year in Copenhagen.

Dr Williams said it was vital for Christians and people of all faiths to take a lead in praying and campaigning for action. A new deal at the UN summit could directly improve the lives of the world's poor whose living conditions are affected by climate change. (see full text below)

World Environment Day marks the third anniversary of the Church of England's environmental campaign Shrinking the Footprint which is being marked by a national event at Lambeth Palace on June 11 where new toolkits and other resources will be unveiled to help churches, cathedrals and other buildings reduce their energy footprint. The next phase of the campaign focusing on water and biodiversity will also be unveiled.

Nearly all dioceses now have an environment officer with many promoting their own green policies to cut the carbon in every parish. The Archbishop will be in St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocese this Friday (June 5) to officially launch its new environment policy.  A range of green projects are already supported by local churches across the Suffolk area from a bicycle and rickshaw scheme to solar panels on a medieval church building.

The Bishop of London the Rt Revd Richard Chartres Chair of Shrinking the Footprint said: "Climate change is a global challenge, the impact of which is being felt first by some of the most vulnerable communities on our planet. Loving our neighbour in the 21st Century demands that we should be involved in the effort to mitigate climate change and to help our neighbours to adapt.
"Environment Sunday is a time for us to reflect on the challenges ahead and to look forward to the Shrinking the Footprint event on the 11th June 2009. This will both provide an opportunity to deepen our own commitment and to engage with our politicians". - See Press Release

Thoughts

Matt 25:37-40 37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? - 38 'When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? - 39 'Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' - 40 "And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.' (NKJ)

Will we leave future generations a land depleted of soil, with polluted seas, with a climate too hot for agriculture? Previous generatations destroyed the woolly mammoths, the dodo, the auroch. Must we also loose the panda, the orang-utan and myriads of invertebrates and plants? We have a choice.

Field at RingsfieldStorm of Hope Retreat 2009

Welcome to the Banquet:
Risking community

led by members of CEL
Friday 13 - Sunday 15 February 2009
Non members welcome. Cost: £90

The retreat in Suffolk will be a follow on from the last retreat, Staying on the Edge new vision, new energy . We cannot maintain the hope and lifestyle of being on the edge as isolated individuals. We need community. But what does that mean? What shape can that community take in the 21st century in a network like CEL?
